February 25, 2006: Careers Day at City of Hope; ASA President Fritz Scheuren to speak

SCASA’s  annual Careers Day will again be held at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte. College students interested in learning about career opportunities in the field of statistics are welcome to attend the morning career fair where numerous companies will have professional statisticians available to chat with you about opportunities in their field. Lunch will feature Olive Garden lasagna (meat or vegetarian) and the featured speaker is ASA Past President Fritz Scheuren who will give a general audience talk on statistics. Breakout sessions will be held in the afternoon. See Flyer (word doc).  There is no registration fee, but there is an optional lunch fee.  For additional information contact Tom Graves (tgraves@amgen.com).

February 25, 2006: First SCASA High School Statistical Poster Contest at City of Hope YOU CAN HELP

This year SCASA is organizing a statistics poster competition for high school students. Packets of flyers announcing the event (which will be held at the same time and place as the Careers Day) have been mailed to a number of schools. However, we need members to help contact the AP Statistics teachers about this event. If you know the AP stat teacher at any of the following schools, please contact Rodney Jee (rodneyjee@yahoo.com) to let him know you can simply phone or e-mail the teacher to encourage them to inform their students about the contest. Packets of flyers (pdf file) have already been sent to many schools (see list of schools), but in case those have been lost we can send more. Just let Rodney Jee know. RodneyJee_mailbox@sc-asa.org

March 24, 2006: 25th Annual Workshop in Applied Statistics at UCLA on Applied Longitudinal Analysis

We hope you will join us for SCASA’s twenty-fifth Annual Workshop in Applied Statistics on Friday, March 24, 2006 (pdf of abstracts and speaker bios).  This year’s workshop is on Applied Longitudinal Analysis. We are very fortunate to have Professor Nan Laird from Harvard University, an excellent and very experienced instructor.  Professor Laird’s Applied Longitudinal Analysis book (by Garrett Fitzmaurice, Nan Laird, and James Ware) will be available the day of the workshop at a special discount.

In honor of this being our 25th annual workshop, there will also be a special lunchtime talk by Ted Porter, a professor of history of science at UCLA, on “The Statistician in History from Laplace to Fisher.”  This promises to be a very interesting and entertaining addition to our workshop.

This year the workshop will be held at UCLA, due to scheduling conflicts at CSULB.  There have also been considerable member requests that the workshop be held in Los Angeles, so this will provide an opportunity to determine how much the Los Angeles location affects turnout.

The workshop will again be held on a Friday, a combination of Professor Laird’s busy schedule and membership requests.

As usual, your registration fee paid by the early registration deadline of March 13th will include all workshop materials and handouts, coffee and tea throughout the morning, bagels and pastries before the workshop begins, and a buffet lunch.  Later registrants cannot be guaranteed lunch availability.

Because parking is more expensive at UCLA and many of you carpool to the workshop, this year a parking permit is not included.  We have made arrangements, however, for an attendant to be at the lot so you can buy your permit from the attendant rather than having to search for a kiosk at which to purchase it.  Further instructions will be included with your registration packet mailed after we receive payment.

We are working hard to get some book and software exhibitors, book discounts and door prizes for you and we look forward to seeing you on March 24th!  You can pick up your workshop materials, have coffee and snacks and socialize from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. and the workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
