SCASA Careers Day at City of Hope   (click for printable flyer)

The annual Careers Day is scheduled for Saturday March 3, 2007, at City of Hope National Medical Center.

Dr. Peter Lachenbruch, president-elect of the ASA, has accepted the invitation to be the key note speaker.

Come learn about the many opportunities open to persons with a background in statistics!

This is a career fair which provides students of any major a unique opportunity to learn about career options in statistics.  In the morning, you will have the opportunity to chat with statisticians from actuarial, aerospace, government, health care, insurance, and pharmaceutical companies from throughout Southern California.  Following the lunchtime speaker, there will be small breakout sessions in which professionals from several different industries will tell you how they spend their work days, the academic preparation and work experience needed, and the current and future opportunities in their fields.  For those ready to begin careers, this is a chance to speak informally with company representatives in the morning and attend free workshops on interviewing skills and resume writing in the afternoon.  A tour of the City of Hope will be available.

City of Hope National Medical Center, Platt Conference Center

1500 East Duarte Road, Duarte, Calif. 91010

Professional chapter members are needed to serve as exhibitors to talk informally with students about working as a statistician in your industry.

Contact Tom Graves, Chapter Vice President of Professional Affairs, at tgraves@amgen.com for more information.

Directions:  Take the 210 freeway to Buena Vista, one exit west of the 605 freeway.  Go south on Buena Vista to Duarte Road and turn left.  The main entrance and Platt Conference Center are on the right.  There is free parking along the south side of Duarte Road or in the lot east of the main gate.

Cost for Event:  Nothing.

SCASA will be offering free 1 year memberships to first time student members at careers day.

Does your company hire statisticians? Then it may benefit your company to be a corporate sponsor of the event in addition to attending it as an exhibitor thereby maximizing exposure.

Contact Rodney Jee at rodneyjee@yahoo.com for more information about sponsorship.

The Southern California Chapter of the American Statistical Association presents

The 26th Annual Workshop in Applied Statistics

Advances in Latent Variable Modeling

Professor Bengt Muthén

Professor Emeritus, University of California, Los Angeles

University of California Los Angeles

Change in Parking Directions!

The parking instructions that were mailed to early registrants directed you to Parking Structure 8 on the UCLA campus. The UCLA Parking Office has changed the parking for the workshop to Parking Lot DD. This parking lot is actually closer to Bradley International Hall. An attendant will be at the parking lot so you can buy your permit from the attendant rather than having to search for a kiosk at which to purchase it.  Please see the revised directions below.

Walk-in registrations are still available, however, lunch and handouts cannot be guaranteed, so arrive early!

The registration fee includes all workshop materials and handouts, coffee and tea throughout the morning, bagels and pastries before the workshop begins. We look forward to seeing you on March 31st!  You can pick up your workshop materials, have coffee and snacks and socialize from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp.

Abstract

This workshop gives an overview of recent developments in statistical analysis with latent variables.  The workshop shows how the idea of latent variables captures a wide variety of statistical concepts, including random effects, sources of variation in hierarchical data, frailties, missing data, finite mixtures, latent classes, and clusters.  The workshop discusses the integration of such statistical latent variable modeling with the traditional latent variable modeling of psychometrics and its focus on measurement error and hypothetical constructs measured by multiple, fallible indicators as seen in item response theory, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. The integration is possible using a general latent variable framework introduced in the Mplus computer program (www.statmodel.com).  The uniqueness of this framework comes from using a combination of continuous and categorical latent variables in conjunction with random intercepts and slopes in multilevel data.  In this way, Mplus combines several different types of programs:  SEM, latent class analysis, IRT, multilevel analysis, survival analysis, and complex survey data analysis - all fully integrated in the general latent variable framework.  The workshop discusses a variety of applications within this unifying framework, combining such different analysis types as factor models, growth curve models, multilevel models, latent class models, latent transition models, loglinear modeling, complier-average causal effect estimation in randomized trials, growth mixture modeling with latent trajectory classes, non-ignorable missing data models, finite mixture models, discrete- and continuous-time survival models, as well as combinations of such models.  Different outcome types are handled, such as continuous, censored, count, zero-inflated, semi-continuous, and categorical.  Analyses of several public health examples are exemplified in terms of Mplus input and output.

 Professor Muthén

Dr. Muthén received his Ph.D. in Statistics at the University of Uppsala, Sweden and is Professor Emeritus at UCLA.   He was the 1988-89 President of the Psychometric Society.  His research interests focus on the development of applied statistical methodology in areas of public health, social and behavioral sciences.  He has made numerous contributions to the field of latent variable modeling.  Dr. Muthén is one of the developers of the Mplus computer program, which implements many of his statistical procedures.

June 8: AMGEN Statistics Seminar featuring Roger Hoerl on Statistical Leadership

AMGEN STATISTICS SEMINAR

Sponsored by Amgen

SPEAKER: Roger Hoerl, Ph.D

TIME/DATE: 8:30 a.m. PT/ 4:30 p.m. PT, Friday, June 8, 2007

PLACE: Amgen, One Amgen Center Drive,

Thousand Oaks, CA 91320

Conference Center Auditorium

TOPIC: Statistical Leadership: From Consultant to Effective Leader

ABSTRACT

Many statisticians in consulting roles would like to enhance their impact on the organizations they consult with. While statisticians’ contributions may be very significant, all too often the statistician is viewed as playing a supporting, rather than leading role, in project success. Similarly, the statistician is often viewed as someone passively giving advice, or performing narrow technical tasks predetermined by others, rather than proactively making things happen and delivering results. Several changes are occurring in our environment that make this situation even more important for us to address. These include corporate downsizing and delayering, which make it more difficult to justify passive consultant roles in the organizational chart, and the enhanced statistical education provided to others both in academia and business and industry (through initiatives such as Six Sigma). Combined with these are the proliferation of easy to use statistical software, which allows others to perform lower level statistical tasks traditionally done by professional statisticians. Perhaps most important is the pervasive impact of the Internet, which now allows sophisticated data analysis to be outsourced to anywhere around the globe quite easily. The purpose of this workshop is to enhance the effectiveness of statisticians in business, industry, and pharmaceuticals, particularly as it relates to exhibiting leadership. The goal is to help statisticians transition from being viewed as passive consultants to being viewed as proactive leaders within their organizations. In conjunction with this workshop, several senior business leaders, CEOs, and other executives were interviewed to obtain their insights into how statisticians can have more impact. In addition, recent statistics graduates were polled to obtain their perspectives on their current roles, and what skills they feel are necessary to succeed. These insights will be shared and discussed at the workshop. The attendees will participate in breakouts to determine specific changes needed, and how to go about making them happen.

SCASA Members are welcome to attend without charge but must RSVP at least two weeks (May 25, 2007) prior to the seminar. To ensure your attendance, contact Dana Thomas at (Statistical_Leadership_Seminar@amgen.com) with your name, company (or university) affiliation. (Continental Breakfast and Lunch will be served)
